Jaguar has a long and storied history starting with its inception by two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley, in 1922. Instead of cars, the company began by building sidecars for motorcycles under the name "Swallow Sidecar Company". Eventually transitioning to producing passenger cars as the Standard Motor Company, the name "SS Jaguar" started to become common as a model name. In 1945 they officially changed their name to Jaguar and began a new era that would see triumph and turmoil.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Jaguar began producing a series of wildly successful, and incredibly beautiful, sports cars under the XK name. In 1961 the first E-Type started production and is still widely considered to be one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Using a slogan "Grace, Space, Pace" to summarize the Jaguar experience, they soon became an international name. While their sports cars were demonstrating success in motorsports, the company expanded to cover the sedan market with the XJ lineup. During the post-war era, few companies had as much luxury prestige as Jaguar.
Things weren't always easy at Jaguar, in the 1960s, facing fears about the future, Jaguar announced its intention to merge with The British Motor Corporation Ltd. Further pressure to consolidate further with the Leyland Motor Corporation Limited resulted in the now defunct British Leyland Motor Corporation. Over the next 20 years, Jaguar existed as part of this conglomerate and established its independence yet again in 1984. After further struggles, Jaguar became part of Ford's new Premier Automotive Group in 1999 joining other brands like Aston Martin, Volvo, and Land Rover.
Over the next decade, Jaguar languished under Ford control never making a profit and in 2007 it was announced that Tata Motors would be yet another new owner. However, after a significant investment, Jaguar, which is now part of Jaguar-Land Rover Limited, has regained its position as one of the premiere automakers in the world.
The combination of luxury, craftsmanship, and performance have made modern Jaguars among the best in the world. Whether you are looking for an executive sedan like the XJ, a premium SUV like the F-Pace, or a world class sports car like the F-Type, Jaguar has something for everyone. With the addition of "R" models in 1995, an additional dose of performance was added to cars like the XJR and XKR and new models designated with SVR compete with some of the best performance cars in the world.
