Compared to most automakers, the story of Tesla is a relatively short one. Contrary to popular believe, it wasn't a chap named Elon who initially created the company. Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning incorporated the company back in July of 2003, having been inspired by the potential of GM's failed EV1 electric car. During the Series A round of investment, Elon Musk joined the company as primary investor and chairman. Their first venture was a premium electric sports car simply dubbed the Tesla Roadster.
While the story may be short, it's just as fascinating. Tesla eschewed the typical automaker process for developing and building cars and emulated a technology company instead. The original Roadster, built on a heavily modified Lotus Elise platform, paved the way as a proof of concept for future Tesla models like the Model S. The company's biggest selling model has helped to propel Tesla to one of the top selling plug-in car manufacturers in the world.
Innovations with regard to safety, charging networks and internal components such as batteries and motors, as well as the now famous Autopilot system have made headlines around the world. The Model S began selling online and in Tesla showrooms here in the U.S. in 2012 and quickly rolled out in key markets like Europe and China. Variants like the Extended Range and insane Performance model have continually been updated over time, with Tesla launching software updates to customer cars remotely.
Since then, Tesla added the innovative Model X SUV as well as the latest entry, the Model 3. The X, available with 5, 6, and 7 passenger variations features trick "falcon wing" doors that are sure to draw some attention in any parking lot. The Model 3, Tesla's smallest and most affordable car took the world by storm, providing Tesla technology at an affordable price.
So what does the future look like for Tesla? The 2020 Tesla Roadster concept was unveiled in 2017, with Musk claiming a blistering 1.9 second 0-60 time and a top speed estimated at 250 mph. Additional models like the Model Y family SUV, as well as Tesla Semi truck are all in the works. To say that Tesla has disrupted the automotive industry is an understatement, and we will continue to watch for what comes next.
